Good Thing It Happens!
Ancient wisdom states there is a time to be born and a time to die. That’s just as true for our cells as it is for ourselves. While focus is often placed on the first half of this truth — on “birth” — it’s becoming clear that the natural death of cells may be just as important. Every day, in every normal adult human, billions of cells literally commit suicide to make room for other new, healthy cells. This happens in our dogs, too.
This normal, natural, and critical body process is called “apoptosis.” Apoptosis is encoded in each cell’s DNA. When a cell triggers its own apoptosis genes, those genes break the cell down completely, so the body can safely recycle or eliminate the remaining particles. It doesn’t hurt, because there are no side effects and very little (if any) inflammation with apoptosis. Apoptosis is as natural as breathing, and as necessary to health. After all, we can’t make room for healthy new cells without apoptosis.
Healthy, normal apoptosis genes don’t turn on randomly. There’s always a reason. Sometimes the cells committing suicide have reached the end of their natural lifespan and are just dying a natural death. Other times, cells trigger their “suicide genes” after they suffer derangement or irreparable damage.

Nobel Prize-Winning Insights into the Natural Life and Death of Cells
Apoptosis is mentioned in textbooks, and many of us encountered the word in high school biology class, if only for five minutes. It was first described well over a century ago. But it took until 2002 for us to understand its importance. That’s when the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, given to those who have made the most important discovery in the field, was awarded to three researchers who study apoptosis.
The winners – Sydney Brenner, H. Robert Horvitz, and John E. Sulston – were jointly awarded “for their discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death.”
Their discoveries were simple, but had a huge impact on scientific inquiry. Here are some important ones:
For every cell that is born, another must die to keep the tissues balanced with the right number of cells.
Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is as important to health as cell birth (mitosis)
Specific genes regulate organ development and apoptosis.
These genes “sculpt” organs in the body by turning cell death “on” and “off.”
There are apoptosis genes in species of all sizes and complexity.
Simple worms like C. elegans have apoptosis genes, and so do humans—and of course, dogs.
In other words, apoptosis genes are critical. They are what makes normal life, development, and death possible, for every cell in every species Brenner, Horvitz and Sulston studied. Normal apoptosis genes monitor each cell for balance and health. They only turn “on” apoptosis – natural cell suicide – if it’s needed. Otherwise, they stay “off.” They are sort of like the automatic braking system (ABS) in your car. The ABS doesn’t kick in unless it is needed. Similarly, apoptosis genes only turn “on” when they’re needed. Otherwise, in a healthy cell, they simply monitor in the background.
Balance Is Sought Throughout the Natural Life Cycle
As Nobel Laureates Drs. Brenner, Horvitz, and Sulston made clear: the body uses apoptosis to maintain balance from womb to tomb. When apoptosis is out of balance, so is health.

And yet, Dr. Dressler didn’t do it all by himself. We deploy an inter-disciplinary team of scientific experts to create, make and refine our cutting-edge nutraceuticals, including veterinary oncologists, PhD’s in biochemistry, and dozens of highly trained and skilled specialists.

There are over a dozen different ingredients used in our formulation, and each one must pass muster before making the cut. Here are the four steps we take before using any ingredient:
- We only use human-grade raw ingredients.
- Those raw ingredients must be from trusted, ethical sources. The majority originate in the USA, but a few come from non-Western traditions and are not yet available in the States. Regardless, ingredients are purchased only from trusted, ethical sources that have a proven track record for quality, safety, and purity.
- We insist on a Certificate of Analysis for every batch of raw ingredients so we can be sure the manufacturer has tested that batch for quality, consistency, and purity. Batches that contain fillers, contaminants, or have any safety or purity issues are immediately rejected.
- We double check all of this by testing each batch – just to be sure that what goes in our product is exactly what we intend it to be.

To ensure the freshest possible products, we manufacture our formulas in small batches from ingredients that are ordered as needed – which means we don’t have raw ingredients just sitting around.
This choice is tough on our bottom line, because buying in small quantities means we usually pay more than we would if bought in bulk. While a few of the raw ingredients we use are common, many more are difficult to procure.
But we do it anyway, because we want to be confident that you are getting the freshest, highest quality ingredients in every bottle and capsule.
FDA, State, and Country Inspections
When a lab is US FDA-registered and approved for human nutraceutical manufacture, they must follow the current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) defined by the FDA for approved and registered labs. In addition to all the steps outlined above, they must also be inspected regularly.
Our labs are subject to regular FDA inspections, including unannounced inspections. They are also licensed by the state, and therefore inspected regularly by state inspectors.
In addition to these federal and state inspections, our labs have been inspected by and approved by various governments around the world. Taking this extra step demonstrates a deep commitment to quality and safety, and we are particularly proud of our labs having been approved by the three countries that are toughest on nutraceuticals: Canada, Australia, and Germany.
Tested, Safe, Trustworthy
To make sure that our products are as safe as possible, we manufacture in nutraceutical labs registered with, approved by, and regularly inspected by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state agencies.
Because we’re manufacturing to human-grade standards, our nutraceuticals may cost a little more than most pet supplements, but they are also put through the most rigorous testing available before, during and after the manufacturing process. For example, we make sure that there are no environmental contaminants, bacteria such as E. coli or Salmonella, yeast, mold, hexane, acetone, lead, arsenic, or melamine.
This attention to quality and testing is time-consuming and costly, but it’s worth it, because the resulting products are high-quality, tested, safe, and effective.
When we tell you that Apocaps® CX is made to human nutraceutical standards, here’s what we mean:
Our labs are mandated to follow current federal Good Manufacturing Processes and must be scrupulous in their testing for purity and safety. If they don’t keep up these standards and processes, the FDA would shut them down.
Every room used in the manufacturing process is protected by sealed doors, clean areas where technicians can “scrub in,” and tested for contamination.
The bottles are tightly safety-sealed on the inside.
A clear tamper-evident seal protects the neck of each bottle.
Each product is stamped with a Lot Number and Expiration Date, so we could do a safety recall. (We have never had a recall.)
Our products also go through a final test after packaging. Each batch of safety-sealed products are quarantined in a sterile room for seven days to give any bacteria, yeast, or mold time to grow, if it is present. Once a week has passed, the batch is sampled and tested thoroughly for microbes. If they are completely clean, they ship. If not, the entire batch is thrown out, and we start all over. The rigorous tests our products are subject to before, during, and after manufacture ensure that there is:

Meet Demian Dressler, DVM, Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Demian Dressler is the creator of Apocaps® CX. He's also the owner of South Shore Veterinary Care, a full-service veterinary hospital in Maui, Hawaii, Dr. Dressler studied Animal Physiology and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis before earning his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University. After practicing in New York, he returned to Hawaii to practice on Oahu before heading home to Maui to open his own hospital. Dr. Dressler consults both dog lovers and veterinary professionals, and is sought after as a speaker on topics ranging from the links between lifestyle choices and disease, nutrition and cancer, and animal ethics. He is the co-author of the best-selling animal health book The Dog Cancer Survival Guide, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Avian Veterinarians. He’s also a member of CORE (Comparative Orthopedic Research Evaluation), and an advisory board member for Pacific Primate Sanctuary, which was founded by his mother and inspired his lifelong love for animals. National Institute of Health Grant
The science behind Apocaps® CX has been vetted by the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC. In 2010, Functional Nutriments was awarded a grant in the amount of a quarter million dollars to “Develop Cancer Chemosensitizer & Radiosensitizer Using Bioavailable Dietary Apoptogens.” This exciting development early in our company’s history forced us to make an important decision: did we want to stay on the nutraceutical path, or become a pharmaceutical company and develop synthetic versions of our dietary apoptogens?
